Episode 50 of The Sailing Podcast is with Charlie Preen of Cumberland Charter Yachts who are based in the Whitsunday Islands, Queensland, Australia.
Many Australian sailors have taken the opportunity to visit and sail in the Whitsundays. It has great access by plane and the island group offers a multitude of options for sailing and getting away from it all. There is great opportunity to enjoy time on the water or take the time to visit many of the resorts and enjoy the sights and fine dining on offer.
I met Charlie at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show in 2014 and in the interview we hear about:
- Why the Whitsundays are the premier yacht charter location
- The reasons why Carina and I love it there
- What sort of skill level you need to charter a yacht
- How chartering can lead to wanting to buy a yacht
- Why people put their yachts into a charter fleet

The Whitsundays offer such a great variety of sailing options and you can learn what you need to know by visiting the Cumberland Yacht Charter website at www.ccy.com.au
Carina and I have visited the Whitsundays many times. This includes taking a week long diving trip on a large sailing yacht as well as chartering a yacht with my sister and her husband. Another time we camped on Hook Island for a week and enjoyed lazy days on the beach and regular snorkeling trips to cool off.
